Liverpool FC – The Post-Suarez Era

On loan, again.

Of course, the first question that springs to mind is why the boy was even signed. Balotelli is well known for his lack of social skills, to put it mildly, often previously displayed by disruptive and sometimes aggressive behavior on the pitch, as well as causing problems away from it. To be fair, Can did relatively well as a center-back in a line of 3 at the back, but his energy and creativity was sorely missed in midfield.

Many people blame Rodgers for not utilizing players optimally, with again Balotelli and Rickie Lambert being the case. Rodgers had previously claimed that Mario Balotelli would NOT be joining Liverpool, and indicated several times after that signing the Italian was NOT his decision.

However, the very next season indicated that this was probably too big a step for the Northern Irishman. During his first season at Liverpool, he played mostly as a wing-back, sometimes even a full-back, and it’s not that hard to fathom the reasons for his failure to impress. Yet, he played mostly as a center-back, and sometimes as a full-back, in an attempt from Rodgers to make the 11 players on the pitch flexible in terms of formation. The team failed to achieve any of the goals set by the owners of the club, that supposedly being to reach the top 4, to win a cup and to work on developing the young players in the squad. Also, many people feel that his man-management skills thoroughly failed the test with Mario Balotelli.

Lazar Markovi is very useful when he plays as a classic winger, an attacking midfielder, or even a second striker, paired up with a classic center-forward. The season was thoroughly revised. When the season ended, Rodgers had spent three years as the Liverpool manager, and became the first manager in 50 years of club’s history not to have won a single trophy in that time. His long-ago spoken words “judge me after three years” came to mind, as well as “a team that spends over 100m in a single transfer window should be winning the title”.

Upon his arrival, Brendan Rodgers was widely perceived as someone with a lot of potential for becoming a truly great manager, having impressed during his two years of managing Swansea. Balotelli is considered widely as a striker that gives most output in a partnership, and the away 0-3 victory against Tottenham was a good example of that. The loan was then cut short, and he was sent back to Madrid. Many players were played out of their natural position, and while one might argue that this probably helped the development of Raheem Sterling, it very much hindered that of Lazar Markovi and Emre Can. Many started calling for him to be sacked.

As mentioned before, Javier Manquillo was on loan at Liverpool from Atletico Madrid, a two-year loan with an option to buy. As for Lambert, a tall player with much strength and little speed was expected to feed on skillfully threaded passes, the cunning footwork of Coutinho, instead of sending high crosses into the box. More experienced, accomplished managers such as Jose Mourinho, Massimiliano Allegri and Roberto Mancini are, failed to make something of him, and despite the obvious talent, Balotelli is still constantly falling short of his potential, his ability to focus, his football intelligence, work-ethic, discipline and team spirit being under constant bombardment from the critics. It was decided that he will be given another chance. The option was believed to be activated by 20 appearances for Liverpool, so Rodgers carefully avoided the boy crossing the magical number 19. But when Sturridge got injured, Balotelli spent most of his time on the pitch as a lone striker. The 2013/14 season and the unexpected title charge saw his reputation rise rapidly. Before that, he had spells at Watford and Reading. The club had spent nearly 120m on new players the previous summer. The same can be said of Emre Can, who has shown time and time again that as a box-to-box central midfielder, he can be the driveing force of the team. Now he has joined Olympic Marseille. Probably the last one.

It would seem that having an inexperienced manager without a single trophy in his career, at such a high level, is taking its toll. Partnered with Daniel Sturridge, Balotelli was a real handful for the Spurs’ defense. He was slowly entering the “big-boys’ game” as Liverpool were expected to continually challenge top teams in England and fight with some strength for a Champions League spot.

After the nightmare at the Britannia Stadium at Stoke, he had a long meeting with the people from FSG in charge of the club. As wrong as it gets.

Brian Clough and the History of Nottingham Forest

They played at the Forest Racecourse, hence the name. But in 1984 he led them to a UEFA Cup semi-final, which they lost in controversial circumstances to Anderlecht amid allegations of the referee being bribed.

After a struggling start in the second tier, Billy Davies became manager in January 2009. Yet, as 2012 drew to an end and with Forest just one point off the playoffs, O’Driscoll was mysteriously sacked and replaced by Alex McLeish as manager.

The decline continued and in 1949 they dropped to the third division for a couple of seasons and then in 1957 went back up to the top division, winning the FA Cup again in 1959, beating Luton Town in the final at Wembley. He left in 2011 to be replaced by former England manager Steve McLaren, whose reign was short-lived after poor form.

The Al-Hasawi Era

In July 2012, new hope came to the City Ground when the club was taken over by the Al-Hasawi family from Kuwait with the promise of money to take them back to the Premiership. This did not improve life on the field, and they were soon relegated to the second division where they struggled and came close in 1914 to dropping out of the Football League.

Brian Clough statue in Nottingham city centreFrom humble beginnings as a bandy club, Nottingham Forest rose to become one of the worlds greatest football teams under Brian Cloughs management. And they stayed there for three seasons, eventually winning promotion back to the Championship in 2008.

By 1898, Nottingham Forest were already looking a strong team when that year they won the FA Cup final (they reached the semi-final in 1885 in their Alliance days) beating local rivals Derby County 3-1 at Crystal Palace.

The fun had only just began. The following two seasons he led them to the playoffs but no further. But in 1975, Brian Clough became manager.

The Brian Clough Era

Brian Clough was not liked in Nottingham after leading Derby County to the league title in 1972, so there were mixed feelings among the fans when he was appointed manager. In their first season back in the top division, they won the championship. After playing early games in the Football Alliance, which they won in 1892, they joined the Football League the same year.

After playing at various grounds around Nottingham, in 1897 they moved to their own stadium, the City Ground on the banks of the River Trent where they play their football to this day. They then went on to win the European Cup two years on the trot, beating Malmo in the final in 1979 and beating Hamburg in the final in 1980. In 1989, the League Cup was again claimed but they could only finish third in the league. Since then, the team have been in decline, but now under a new manager Billy Davies they are showing signs that they may be on the rise once more.

But that was a short-lived return to the big time as they were relegated again in 1999 and have not been back in the top flight since as the clubs financial problems continued. They finished runners-up in the league in 1967 and reached the FA Cup semi-finals, but this was not to prove the start of bigger things as in 1972 they fell back down to the second division. One of their first moves was to appoint Sean O’Drsicoll as manager and they said that the 2012-13 season would be one of consolidation. But doubts were starting to be eased when he led them to promotion back to the first division in 1977.

This article traces their history from being founded in 1865 as Nottingham Forest Football & Bandy Club, through the Brian Clough era, to the present day where they sit in the Championship battling for a return to the top flight.

The Birth of Nottingham Forest

Bandy is an early version of ice hockey, and in 1865 a group of bandy players decided to form a football club and called themselves Nottingham Forest Football & Bandy Club. Brian Clough left but will be remembered as one of Britains most successful ever football managers. Forest soon dropped Bandy from the title and concentrated on football. Almost as an aside, they won the League Cup in 1978 and 1979 but could only come runners-up in the league in 1979.. He died in 2004 of cancer and a statue to his honour was erected in Nottingham city centre in 2008.

The Fall and Rise of Nottingham Forest

Under the management of ex-Nottingham Forest player Frank Clark, the club returned to the Premiership the following season and then finished third in 1995. This was only for one season, and in 1998 they were promoted back to the Premiership.

When Brian Cloughs assistant Peter Taylor left in 1980, Nottingham Forest struggled a little, leading some to believe that he was the key to Cloughs magic. Their first game was against Notts County, formed four years earlier. The following season, the unthinkable happened and the once great Nottingham Forest were relegated to the third tier of English football. They did make the playoffs in 2003, but lost to Sheffield United. But all that was overshadowed by the tragedy at the FA Cup semi-final against Liverpool at Hillsborough when nearly a hundred Liverpool fans were crushed to death.

Those visiting Nottingham Forest today should try one of these excellent pubs for a pre or post match pint of beer.

In 1990, Nottingham Forest again won the League Cup but lost in the FA Cup final to Tottenham Hotspur. They also lost the League Cup final in 1992 and then in 1993 they were relegated to the second division. This affected life on the pitch and they were relegated again in 1997. But despite a run to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup in 1996, Nottingham Forest were in financial trouble

Champions League grand finale countdown

And with Javier Mascherano doing a great defensive job along with Pique, Barcelonas coach doesnt even have the need to risk them. As of today he specializes in the coverage of European soccer and NBA basketball for BetIAS website.

It is known that there are only two ways to neutralize Barcelona: through constant fouls that prevents their game from being fluid, or by keeping the ball away from them.

From what we saw on Man Us last games of the season in England, if Ferguson chooses a more offensive scheme the midfield would be composed of Park, Giggs, Carrick, Valencia, with Rooney in between them and Chicharito, who would be the reference in attack. In the 2006 final against Arsenal he scored the equalizer that made it possible for them to come from behind and win the championship.

Barcelona faces its third UEFA Champions League final in six years, and the first one without striker Samuel Etoo, who played a vital role in conquering the title in those two previous occasions by opening the score for the Catalonians. And in the second one disputed in 2009 versus Manchester United he gave his team the lead during a first half that the Red Devils had dominated.

While Ferguson decides how to confront this final -his third in four seasons- Barcelonas coach Joseph Guardiola is doubtful about whom the starter left defender will be.

One of the options that Ferguson is reviewing is whether to align a double pivot with Carrick and Scholes to stop Barcelonas playmakers or to go sacrifice one of them, most likely Scholes, to give its place to South Korean Park Ji-Sung, who is more of a winger, and could exchange roles with Ryan Giggs on the left side. . Despite being in the early years of his career as a journalist, which began in 2006, he has proven that he can translate that passion into truthful and objective information of interest for the sports betting industry.

The Red Devils already suffered him once in 2009, when Messi scored the second goal in Barcelonas 2-0 victory over them. He is working on two options: Carles Puyol or Eric Abidal, both recently recovered from their respective injuries.

These are the champions.

Author’s Bio:

When it comes to sports, Andrew Hill is more than just a passionate fan. With Etoo gone it is Lionel Messi who is called to make the difference this Saturday at Wembley, when Barcelona will defy Manchester United once again. Not to forget Busquets silent role of recuperating the ball possession from the rival, and the intermittent associations of Messi with them participating in the playmaking.

Manchester United and Barcelona will be disputing the crown of Europe this Saturday at the legendary Wembley stadium.

Both teams are still uncertain about their starting eleven, but what there are no doubts about is regarding them being the best squads in Europe at press time, and a good example of that is not only that the two of them reached the Champions League final, but also that both won their respective domestic leagues: Man u the English Premier League and Barcelona Spanish La Liga. In an effort to stop him, Manchester United coach Sir Alex Ferguson is carefully working in his starting 11 for Saturday, and claims to have five or six effective line ups to neutralize Messi and company. And Man U has key players that can perform both roles effectively.

Despite the two of them being part of the usual starters in the defense along Gerard Pique and Daniel Alves, the risk from then suffering a relapse from their injuries in such a big game is what keeps Guardiola from putting the two of them at the same time. It is in the midfield where this battle will be fought, as it is from here that Xavi and Iniesta control the rhythm of the game for Barcelona, and involve the rest of their teammates in the process by always being an option for them in case they cant find who to pass the ball to

Bayern Munich signs Chile midfielder Arturo Vidal

Of Juventus’ five players nominated for the UEFA award, only goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon and midfielder Paul Pogba remain.

MUNICH (AP) Bayern Munich completed the long-anticipated transfer of Chile midfielder Arturo Vidal from Italian champion Juventus on Tuesday.

The Bundesliga champion did not give any immediate details, but German media say Vidal signed a deal through 2020.

Italian media reports suggested Bayern paid 36 million euros ($39.5 million), rising to 40 million euros ($44 million) with bonuses, to bring the 28-year-old Vidal back to the Bundesliga.

Vidal scored 15 goals and set up 21 more in 117 league games over four seasons for Bayer Leverkusen before leaving for Juventus in 2011.

The rugged midfielder is expected to fill the gap left by the departure of Bastian Schweinsteiger for Manchester United, and to give Pep Guardiola’s team more toughness.

Vidal was brought to Germany at age 20 from Chilean club Colo-Colo by then Leverkusen squad director Michael Reschke. Reschke ended his 35-year association with Leverkusen when Bayern appointed him as a director in June.

Vidal helped Juventus to four consecutive Serie A titles and, last season, the Coppa Italia. Andrea Pirlo and Carlos Tevez have left the club.

This month, Bayern signed Brazil midfielder Douglas Costa from Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk for a reported 30 million euros ($33 million).

Costa will help ease Bayern’s concerns over injury-prone wingers Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben, 32 and 31, respectively.

. Barcelona denied the club a treble by winning the Champions League final between them in Berlin.

Vidal, capped 69 times by Chile, helped the team to its first Copa America win on July 5 by scoring in the penalty shootout win over Argentina in the final.

He reached a deal with prosecutors to avoid trial after crashing his Ferrari while driving under the influence of alcohol early in the tournament on June 16. He apologized for insulting a police officer and agreed to pay compensation to a driver involved in the crash.

Vidal is on a 10-man shortlist for the best player in Europe
